Lectures

Week 1

Ms Jinchi started off the lesson by starting a discussion about the general idea of communication and how the visual arts help us to deliver a message and motifs.

After we've passed that, we were divided into groups and each group is given a line of text to which we were have to act out in a game of charades with the whole class. The rules are simple, speaking, mouth words, write, draw , and anything are not allowed except making a body gesture or movements. It demonstrated to us that without access to any of these different channels of communication, it would be more difficult and time consuming to deliver a clear message for the receiver.

Then she briefs us about the module outline and gave us our first assignment. She gave us a song title, which we have to analyse and come up with a piece of artwork that delivers the same message as the song did, "Another Day in Paradise" by Phil Collins is the song that were chosen for us, this assignment have to be collected in the fourth week.

Aside from that, another assignment were also given, we have to watch a video that explains what communication is and produce a five to six slide presentation for next week to present what we got from the video, as well as our own experiences.

Week 2

On the second week of the class, we then present what we learned from the video, all the groups pretty much have the same topic, so I was kinda thinking it was pointless for us to actually present the same thing over and over again, because it's basically the same thing and we all understand it. anyway here is our presentation.

Week 3

On this week, Ms Jinchi come to each groups one by one to discuss about our progress and ideas for the assignment. Our group idea was to make a comic where each of the member of our group make 3 panels from the storyboard, but Ms Jinchi want us to explain and give a reason why should it be a comic and be responsible for that decision.

Week 4 - Quiz

The class started off by doing the first quiz for this semester, the quiz is about the lectures that Ms. Jinchi uploaded in Times and what we have presented about communication before. Afterwards, Ms. Jinchi continued to see our progress one by one and discuss about it. So this is the progression that I made,

Sketch 1
Sketch 2
So after a lot of research and discuss on how what kind of artwork we are gonna make, we decided to make a piece of painting, either digitally or traditional way, and then combine it on one piece of artboard.

Week 5

So, on the fifth week, we presented one by one of how we come up with this idea, why we chose it, and basically said overall progress from the start to the finish. After all groups were done presenting, Ms. Jinchi informed that on the next week, we will have a field trip. We'll be going to Bricksfield, Kuala Lumpur. We were asked to take pictures of signs, symbols, logos or any type of patterns that have meaning that reflects a culture or anything that connects to an issue in Malaysia.

Some of the pictures that I took while I was there

Another Day in Paradise
Phil Collins

She calls out to the man on the street
'Sir, can you help me?
It's cold and I've nowhere to sleep,
Is there somewhere you can tell me?'
He walks on, doesn't look back
He pretends he can't hear her
Starts to whistle as he crosses the street
Seems embarrassed to be there
Oh think twice, it's another day for you and me in paradise
Oh think twice, 'cause it's just another day for you,
You and me in paradise, think about it
She calls out to the man on the street
He can see she's been crying
She's got blisters on the soles of her feet
She can't walk but she's trying
Oh think twice, 'cause it's another day for you and me in paradise
Oh think twice, it's just another day for you,
You and me in paradise, think about it
Oh Lord, is there nothing more anybody can do
Oh Lord, there must be something you can say
You can tell from the lines on her face
You can see that she's been there
Probably been moved on from every place
Cause she didn't fit in there
Oh think twice, 'cause another day for you and me in paradise
Oh think twice, it's just another day for you,
You and me in paradise, just think about it, think about it
It's just another day for you and me in paradise
It's just another day for you and me in paradise, paradise
It's just another day for you and me in paradise
It's just another day for you and me in paradise, paradise
It's just another day for you and me
It's just another day for you and me
It's just another day for you and me in paradise
In paradise

Before we make the artwork, we have to think about what is the message that the song is trying to send, so we discuss about it and we come up with these points;
  • The song is about society, where those who lives on a good life ignores or doesn't care about those who are homeless, broke, or in need.
  • I think the song is actually from those homeless people's point of view, where they see the people who could get anything they want, just like living in a paradise
  • a message about don't be an individualist ( doesn't care about anyone or anything else besides themselves)
  • "Think about it" means those homeless people seeing us like having everything and still unsatisfied and not happy with what we have. "Just think about it"
  • "Paradise" in the chorus means something close to a good life (Metaphor)
So, I think the song is delivering a message about individualism.
After we got the message, all we have to do is illustrate it, and here it is

My artwork about "individualism" drawn by pen and colouring digitally
