Lecture Notes

Week 1
(27th of March 2018)

We were introduced to the module outline by Mr. Martin Chong, the entire module basically is about teaching us how to make a film ( short film to be more precise ), but we will learn the basics or what it needs to make a "good" film.

He also taught us the basics of using Adobe Premiere Pro, for example like how to set up a new project, import a project and sequence, cropping a footage using in and out markers and bringing those into the timeline, or edit the sound of the video to make different scenes have the sound that was there before the second one in the same scene but different perspectives, and etc.

So Mr. Martin tell us to come up with some ideas that is related about the theme of "The End of The World", he told us to just have fun with it and try new kind of ideas and make it fun.

Exercise

Mr. Martin gave us a simple exercise to start our journey in video editing and production, he gave us clips of videos, and we're supposed to edit those into one complete video.

Week 2 : Cinematography

On the second week, Mr. Martin gave us a lecture about scene shots (Shots : Visual language for communication through screens), perspective and screen directions. There are 9 types of shot;

     1. Extreme Wide Shot (EWS)
G:\pic\2012 ews.jpg
Fig 1(a). an example of EWS

Shows a broad view of the surroundings around the character and conveys scale, distance, and geographical location. It's used to show where character is in his/her environment. If it's used at the beginning of a scene it's often called an "establishing shot”

     2. Wide Shot (WS)

Fig 1(b) an example of WS

A wide shot includes the entire subject and important objects in the immediate surroundings.

     3. Medium Wide Shot (MWS)

i_am_legend_xl_03-film-a
Fig 1(c). an example of MWS

Shows a character usually cut off across the legs above or below the knees. It is wide enough to show the physical setting in which the action is taking place, it permit a nice balance of figure and surrounding.

     4. Medium Shot (MS) I

D:\movie grabs\spiderman\spiderman 1.jpg
Fig 1(d). an example of MW I

-A medium shot shows the subject that are important to understanding what the subject is doing. Gesture and expression now become more visible.

-A medium shot of a person sitting still might show his body from the waist up, letting hands and the lower half of his body fall outside the frame.

     5. Medium Shot (MS) II

D:\movie grabs\pulp fiction\pulp_fiction_xl_02.jpg
Fig 1(e). an example of MW II

A medium shot of a person performing movement or action, on the other hand, would have to include his arms and hands, since these are generally important to understanding what he's doing.

     6. Medium Close Up (MCU)

G:\pic\splice mcu.jpg
Fig 1(f). an example of MCU

A medium close up films subject character from approximately midway between waist and shoulders to above the head.

     7. Over the Shoulder Shot (O.S)

G:\pic\os01.jpg
Fig 1(g). an example of O.S

The over-shoulder shot shows the subject from behind the shoulder of another person.

     8. Close Up Shot (CU)

D:\movie grabs\twilight\large_twilight.jpg
Fig 1(h). an example of CU

A close-up is used to isolate the most important part of the subject. For a speaker, this is generally the head, or small object. It emphasizes facial expression, details of a object.

     9. Extreme Close Up Shot (ECU)

cu eye
Fig 1(i). an example of ECU

An extreme close-up single out a portion of the face magnifies a detail. The object is to focus on important detail either to increase the drama or impact on a situation or to allow the viewer to see necessary picture information more clearly.

Week 2
(3rd of April 2018)

Before Mr. Martin gave us the exercise, he showed us some examples of videos that uses different type of shots. The point of the exercise is to make the story a bit similar to the example one. So he gave us 2 different type of clips from different videos, one is about a girl that is waiting for someone while texting, and the other one is a girl that is alone in the darkness texting too. So i think we have to edit these 2 types of clips into one video that makes sense out of it.
Fig 2.(b) Workspace in Adobe Premiere Pro
In week 2, we got two exercises. We were asked to work in pair after we done the first exercise, we have to recreate the types of shots by using a camera.

Exercise

we were asked to work in pair where we were given a list of shots. Mr. Martin wanted us to try and take shots based on the types of shots required by using a phone camera, this is our pictures;

Week 3
(10th of April 2018)

This week, Mr. Martin just gave us a lecture about storytelling and the basics of it. In storytelling, there are story and plot of the story.

  • Story = Explicitly Presented Events + Presumed/Inferred Events
  • Plot  =  Explicitly Presented Events + Added Non-diegetic (narrative) Material

Story is the full sequence of events in a work of a fiction as we imagine to have taken place - in the order which they would have occurred in life.
Plot is concerned with how events are related, how they are structured and how the enact changed in the major characters.

The story and plot overlap in one respect and diverge in others. The plot explicitly presents certain story events, so these events are common to both domains. The story goes beyond the plot in suggesting some diegetic events which we never witness. The plot goes beyond the story world by presenting nondiegetic images and sounds which may affect our understanding of the story.

In a story, there's a structure that makes a story which is;

  •  Beginning : Setup / introduction of a story
  •  Middle      : Confrontation of a problem in the story
  •  End           : Resolution of problems

02
Fig 1(j). The visual representation of Act Structure
SETUP :
  • To establish the dramatic situation
  • To introduce the main characters.
  • Leads to an incident that complicates the story

CONFRONTATION :
  • Known as ‘Rising Action’
  • To develop obstacles / complications
  • Leads to climax of the story

RESOLUTION :
  • Answer to all obstacles / problems
  • Tying the loose ends
  • Ending of climax

Before class being dismissed, Mr. Martin set the group for next week project, where we have to make a video similar to this
All of us are divided in 2 groups, each group have to remake 1 of the version of the video, my group have to do the hard sell, and the other one do the emotional.

Exercise

We got an exercise in this week to write out which part of the video is which according to the act structure from Lalin and Blind Piano Tuner, this is what i break down from the video according to Act Structure.

Week 4
(17th of April 2018)

This week is the video shooting for our group project, it's about a commercial that was planned on the week before. My group got the hardsell setting, which is easy and to the point, to be honest the shooting process was quite not fun, as all the proccess seems like not planned at all, it was a mess. But we made it through.

Week 5
(24th of April 2018)

On the fifth week, Mr. Martin gave us a lecture about Lighting and Mise en Scene which is everything that is appear on the video or cinema, for example;
  1. Decors and Props
  2. Lighting
  3. Space
  4. Costume and Make up
  5. Movement and Acting
After explaining both what Mise en scene and Lighting basics, he then want us to look for a video that emphasizes on mise en scene and post it in the blog.

Exercise

For this exercise, we are told to edit the videos that we shot last week.

So, we first import all the videos into Adobe Premiere Pro, then add the Dip to Black, which is a video transition like a black screen for a movie title and credit scene, we also can use it for caption, just depends on how we want to use it for, we just have to change the layer of the solid color.

Fig 4.(a) Title Sequence
There's another exercise where we have to look for a video that uses one f the mise en scene elements and explain it in our own perspective. So i look for videos online, and I decided to use Scientist music video by Colplay.

The music video started with the man laying on the bed outside, by some seconds we can tell that this is a backward video, which means that something happened before this, this is the usage of movement and acting.
Fig 4.(b) Scene one
Fig 4.(c) Scene two
By this scene, we can tell that something happened, maybe an accident or something.
Fig 4.(d) Scene three
Fig 4.(e) Scene four
So, by the scenes, without putting any captions, we could tell what's happening, which is an accident. This is a usage of Decors and Props.

Week 6
(1st of May 2018)

No class was conducted today.

Week 7
(8th of May 2018)

For this week, we got a lecture about color correction and color grading.

Color Correction is a singular process that involves making adjustments to an image to “correct” any deviations from its standard appearance, it's include a correction in exposure, white balance, ISO noise, and contrast.

Color Grading is is a multi-process that can change the visual tone of an entire film. Once your footage is corrected, you can work to change the thematics and aesthetics. Grading is used more as a brush to paint a picture with purpose. These include; shot matching, removing objects, shape masks, and cinematic looks.

Exercise

For exercise 7, we were told to try to make a cold and warm color grading. In order to get those kind of color grading, we have to create an adjustment layer and make the setting in it so that any video below that can have that color grading. It doesn't necessarily have to only be in adjustment layer to make these kind of settings, you can use it directly into that video itself by changing the temperature or the color wheel or anything you prefer using.

Here's the final outcome.

Week 8
(15th of May 2018)

On the eight week, there was no lecture. Mr. Martin explained briefly about shooting exercise for next week. We were asked to discuss with our groups and talk about how we wanted to shoot the video, and just some consultations individually with Mr. Martin for our final project idea.

Week 9
(22nd of May 2018)

On this week, we did our film exercise where each member of our group gets to experience different roles in shooting a film.
Fig 6.a Editing
Then I added some color grading.

Week 10
(29th of May 2018)

No class was conducted on this week.

Week 11
(5th of June 2018)

Here's my finalized story after many changes with Mr. Martin.

---------

while i was in class, i got a message. it's from someone in whatsapp that i don't know. Her profile pic shows a pretty girl, with a message "do you want to be my friend ?".
What?, is this a prank?. This is quite random but I don't really want to be a jerk so I say "Yeah :)"
this is quite uncommon i thought. Then, I show off these messages to the friend beside me.
".....", "Dude???". They are gone...
"IS ANYONE HERE? IS THIS A JOKE, STOP IT IT"S NOT FUNNY !", Then I ran outside, there's a guy that i bumped while i rushed outside but when i turn around, he dissapeared too.
Then I look around, there's a girl hiding behind a room.
I tried to get closer, suddenly she ran towards me. Its scaring me so i ran away but she got my legs, and I somehow managed to clip away.
When I'm hiding somewhere, I remember about the unknown number, so i message him "Can you help me??, there's someone trying to kill me"
"I'll be there"
There??, does she even know where I am???
....
She appeared in my back.
